Graduate Intern
Dani Wheeler

Dani is a compassionate and dedicated clinician whose professional identity is deeply informed by a lifelong commitment to service. During her husband’s military career, she served as a Key Spouse, providing leadership, guidance, and emotional support to military families navigating complex life stressors. Through this role—and through her lived experience as both a military child and spouse—Dani developed a nuanced understanding of cultural diversity, resilience, and the psychological impact of frequent transitions and uncertainty. These experiences ultimately shaped her passion for mental health and trauma-informed care.

Dani has clinical experience working with both civilian and military populations, including veterans struggling with PTSD, and completed her practicum in a private practice specializing in trauma-related disorders. Her clinical interests include anxiety, depression, trauma, PTSD, crisis intervention, grief and loss, life transitions, school stress, self-esteem, spiritual exploration, and couples and family counseling, with particular sensitivity to the needs of military-connected and adoptive families.

Her therapeutic approach is integrative and evidence-based, drawing from cognitive-behavioral therapy, person-centered therapy, mindfulness-based interventions, and trauma-focused modalities. Dani works from a holistic framework and incorporates a faith-based perspective when aligned with client preferences. She is a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional (CCTP), a certified SYMBIS Facilitator, and has completed Psychological First Aid training.

Dani works with adolescents, adults, and older adults and is committed to creating a safe, respectful, and supportive environment where clients feel heard, empowered, and valued. Her counseling style is grounded in empathy, collaboration, and cultural humility, with a strong belief in each individual’s capacity for growth and healing.

She earned her bachelor’s degree from Virginia Tech and is currently completing her master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Liberty University.

Outside of her professional work, Dani is a married mother of two teenagers and part of a transracial adoptive family. She enjoys reading, traveling, and spending time with animals, and has previously volunteered teaching English to refugees and asylum seekers—experiences that continue to shape her perspective and reinforce her commitment to service.
